The Skydome

One stadium in Toronto has hosted The Blue Jays, The Raptors, The Buffalo Bills and Toronto Argonauts, as well as many concerts and plenty of main events. It is now known as the Rogers Centre, (especially to those who are born after the 92-93 World Series) but if you are or were a fan from 1989 to 2005, it will forever remain the Skydome.

The Dome, just as it is opening.

Fun Fact 1: The highest attendance for the Dome came from Wrestlemania 18 in 2002 with 68, 237 people.

Fun Fact 2: The venue was noted for being the first stadium to have a fully retractable motorized roof, as well as for the 348-room hotel attached to it, with 70 rooms overlooking the field.

The Toronto Blue Jays

At a time in sports where market sizes drive relocation, Canada is home to only one MLB franchise.

Now we all know the Jays weren't the first Major League Baseball team in Canada, that distinction belongs to the Montreal Expos, but they are the last Canadian team standing, and as a result they have become Canada's baseball team. In recent years they have held preseason series' in Montreal, even sparking rumours that the Expos could be make a return if expansion ever comes around. Turn on a  match up with Seattle or one with the divisional rivals in New York or Boston, and you will see the Jays faithful travel well from coast to coast. That's a direct result of having the 2nd largest land mass in the world as your fan base.
Let's Go Blue Jays!

Joe Carter's World Series Winning Home Run

Many days have passed since October 23rd, 1993, when Joe Carter captivated our entire nation as he stepped up to bat against Mitch Williams in the bottom of the ninth inning, game 6 of the 1993 World Series. Rickey Henderson was the tying run on second and Paul Molitor represented the winning run on first.  The count was 2-2,  Williams through a fastball down and in, Carter kept his head down and hit a rocket over the left field fence! Pushing the Toronto Blue Jays past the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 to end the series.

Joe Carter, Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee since 2003, was only one of two people to ever end a World Series with a home run. Bill Mazeroski ended the 1960 World Series when Pittsburgh defeated New York in-game 7.

As an 11-year-old boy who loved baseball and the Blue Jays, hearing Tom Cheek say "Touch 'em all Joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life"  remains the best sports moments of my childhood. As an adult I can appreciate how rare those moments actually are. Being a professional sports fan is full of disappointment and pain. Unless of course, you are a New England Patriots Fan

This Week in Beer - Ale-Induced Anecdotals

A post by Scott F

Beer is awesome, but you knew that. But did you know that beer could get... awesomer (not a real word)? Some very cool stories of people doing awesome things with beer have crept up in the last couple of weeks that we thought our readers would find interesting. Enjoy!

Beer brewed from prehistoric whale fossils

What? It’s true. These folks found yeast in the bones of some long dead whale and said: “Hey, yeast makes beer, let’s use this prehistoric whale bone yeast to make beer.” To be fair that is exactly what I would be thinking. The Lost Rhino Brewing Company is behind the new Bone Dusters Paleo Ale (get it, paleo, har har). They teamed up with a non-profit called Paleo Quest to pull of this feat of brewing magic. Finally, a practical use for old bones. Check out the story.

On the topic of odd beer ingredients, how about smoked goat brains?

The newest in a long line of TV promo beers (including the Ommegang Brewery Game of Thrones-inspired brews), the AMC’s The Walking Dead now has a beer of its own. If you’re going to make a beer for zombie fanatics you don’t go half way, so these guys threw in some brains, you know, for authenticity sake. Story here.

Beer fasting.

Most people give up trifles for lent like watch Ellen or their daily Oreo indulgence. Chris Schryer, like few others before him, is giving up food. Yes, food. He’s subsiding of only beer during his observance. Follow his exploration on his blog (great reads).

Baseball and beer. Enough said.

Thrillist.com took it upon themselves to match every Major League Baseball team with a beer that they felt fit best. I’ll say nothing about them matching up the Toronto Blue Jays with Labatt’s Blue, other than it’s a lazy travesty. Still a good read.

Beer your meat, if you know what’s good for you.

Scientists have found that marinating your meat in beer can prevent the formation of crazy compounds from the grill that can cause cancer. That’s right, beer beats cancer.

Rob Ford announces the Ford Nation Brewing Company.

Seriously! Okay, not seriously. A well-played April Fools’ Day article by Mom ‘n’ Hops declared that Toronto’s embattled mayor was setting out to create the best beer the city’s ever had. They noted that a gravy-flavoured beer was also on the way. Nicely done, Mom 'n' Hops.
